5 Propane Tips Every Dallas Homeowner Needs This Winter

North Texas winters can be unpredictable. One week you’re running the A/C, and the next you’re digging out your winter jacket. When it gets cold outside, your propane tank has to work harder to keep your home warm, your water hot, and your stove ready for dinner.

Keep reading this blog from Cadenhead Servis Gas for tips to help your Greater Dallas home stay comfortable and prepared all winter.

1. Order Before Your Tank Runs Low

Propane use increases once it gets cold. Instead of waiting until your gauge is close to empty, place your order early so there’s plenty of time to get you on the delivery schedule. Ordering ahead is the easiest way to avoid a runout.

Or, if you want to simplify your propane orders, let us take care of them for you. With automatic delivery, we keep an eye on the weather and your usage history and place orders for you, so you can worry less about your tank levels.

2. Keep the Path to Your Tank Clear

Our drivers need easy access to your tank on delivery day. Before we arrive, check the following:

  • Trim back bushes and low branches near your tank and driveway
  • Clear away leaves, debris, and any ice from walkways
  • Unlock gates or let us know how to get in
  • Keep pets inside during the delivery
  • Make sure your house number is easy to see from the street

3. Know What to Do If You Smell Gas

Propane gas is naturally odorless but has a strong rotten-egg or skunk-like odor added to it, so you’ll know right away if something’s wrong. If you smell it, take these steps right away:

  • No flames or sparks. Put out all smoking materials and open flames right away. Don’t use lights, appliances, or phones, since a spark can cause a fire or explosion.
  • Leave the area immediately. Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect a leak.
  • Shut off the gas. If it’s safe, turn the main valve on your tank to the right (clockwise).
  • Report the leak. From a neighbor’s home or another safe spot, call us right away. If you can’t reach us, call 911 or your local fire department.
  • Don’t go back inside. Stay out until a Cadenhead employee, emergency responder, or qualified technician says it’s safe.
  • Get your system checked. Don’t use any propane appliances until Cadenhead Servis Gas or a qualified technician confirms your system is leak-free.

It’s always better to check and be wrong than to wait and be sorry, so never hesitate to make the call.

4. Prepare for Winter Storms and Outages

North Texas has seen plenty of icy weather that knocks out power for hours or even days. If you have a propane generator or use propane for cooking and heating, a well-stocked tank gives you a reliable backup when the grid goes down. Filling up before a storm is on the way means you won’t be competing for fuel when everyone else has the same idea.
